Timetable

18:00

Starting Point: Syntagma Square (opposite of Hotel Grande Bretagne)

18:00 – 18:30

Walk down Ermou Street (the street of Mercury). Hermes (Mercury), the god of commerce and protector of merchants, gave his name to the street where the heart of commerce beats in Athens.

Along the way, we will visit the 11th century church of Panagia Kapnikarea, a Byzantine monument in Athens dedicated to Saint Mary and then walk towards Plaka, the capital’s most historic and picturesque district with labyrinth alleys, quaint neoclassical houses, and a generous number of monuments and excavated ancient sites.

18:30 – 19:00
  • Saint Eleftherios or as it is often called the small Cathedral, a 900-year old church that looks like a museum of sculpture, since its exterior walls are decorated with engravings from the ancient, Roman and early Christian years.
  • Church of Saint Nikolaos Ragavas. Built in the 11th century by a member of the aristocratic family Ragava, it was the first church to ring a bell after the temporary liberation of Athens from the Ottomans in 1822.
  •  The Choregic Monument of Lysicrates, a monument built in 334/5. Lysicrates, sponsor of a dance group that won a dance contest, placed his prize, a tripod, atop of the monument.
  • Tripodon Street (Street of the Tripods), one of the oldest streets in Europe with the same name and the same direction for more than 2.500 years. The street used to be the “Walk of Fame” of Ancient Athens and led to the Theater of Dionysus at the south slope of the Acropolis. The tripods, the prizes of the theatrical contest, were placed on the top of the monuments along the left and right side of the road.
19:00 – 21:30

This private home is the real deal, a historic building and a private residence made exclusively available to us by special arrangement. Following a warm welcome from the resident of the house, you’ll enjoy a delicious catered meal and a truly memorable experience—the dining room is set over a glass floor through which one can marvel at the recent archaeological discoveries on Tripodon Street below!
