Friday, February 27, marked one of the most memorable tours in Discover Greek Culture’s history. We were delighted to have the Mayor of Athens, Yiorgos Kaminis, join us for the first ever run of our latest cultural experience, Touching History. What better way to learn about the history and evolution of Greek culture than by being alongside a public servant working tirelessly to help celebrate and promote this culture to the world?

An excitement filled the air as we filed into the Benaki museum after hours. A period expert led us through the museum’s stunning 19th century exhibitions, explaining the cultural, economic and political forces that catalyzed Greek independence. We were then escorted into the museum’s vaults, where we had the opportunity to touch and investigate actual artifacts from the men and women who lived through these tumultuous times.
The Greek food and wine that followed in the museum’s restaurant was exquisite, and yet there was a noticeable quiet in the air around the table as we sat in reflection of all that we had seen, heard and felt. The paintings, the clothes, the personal effects—the heirlooms and the personalities whose stories they told. It was a lot to take in and a powerful way to connect with the past.
Mayor Kaminis himself appeared moved by the evening but also pleased to see a tourism experience that let guests dig deeper into Greek history and culture. As someone who has spent his entire time in office supporting sustainable, private sector cultural and tourism initiatives, it was an honor to have him with us at DGC.
